Alexa Wilson presents 1000 Tears
Alexa Wilson, as one of NZ’s most cu ng edge dance and performance ar sts, recently returned to NZ from being US/ NYC based a er presen ng her work in NYC, Berlin and Vienna in 2025 and has developed 1000 Tears across 3 countries including Aotearoa. She is returning to Berlin to Lakes Studios Berlin residency in July this year and will be presenting 1000 Tears in the new Silo Theatre in East Street CBD Tāmaki Makaurau as the NZ premiere. 1000 Tears been invited to present at The Tank NYC.
Alexa Wilson is director/founder of Experimental Dance Festival Aotearoa (CNZ funded) delivering 20 artists across 10 locati ons in November-December 2026. As a new solo work 1000 Tears (60 mins) embodies a double meaning of crying and cuting (referring to death by 1000 paper cuts) framed as a performance art dance and feminist cri que of a climate that cushions psychopathic and devaluing modes of being.
It is a ritualised tearing apart and alchemising or healing of disempowering ideologies and experiences in a climate of both so (passive aggressive) and hard power (violent authoritarianism).
1000 Tears was developed and presented in NYC at Triskelion Arts, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Mothership residency, Last Frontier, and in Berlin at Lake Studios Berlin, and has been developed to full length in Tāmaki Makaurau. “Fierce”- Triskelion Arts NYC, “Powerful”-Moran Sanderovich, Berlin artist, “Spectacular” -Marcela Giesche, Lake Studios Berlin director. Alexa creates solo performance art projects as radical body based aesthetics, commissioned group choreographies and collaborative video projects. She has presented across NZ, NYC, Europe, UK, Canada, Australia, India and China e.g Berlin at Sophiensaele, Uferstudios, MPAB, Brussels Volksroom, Vienna’s Improper Walls, London’s Ugly Duck, Glasgow’s Buzzcut fes val, NYC’s Grace Exhibition Space, CPR, Dixon Place, Beijing’s Red Gate. She has won awards in NZ and created works on dance companies Touch Compass and Footnote NZ Dance Company.
